Note from the Editor of 7Visions Magazine: Today, we continue our On Wednesdays We Rock Letters series as a tribute to our National Founders, their legacies and the tradition of wearing red letters on Wednesdays as a homage to the Seven Visionary Men who founded our brotherhood at Texas Tech University on Wednesday November 25th, 1987. In tribute to that history, during this special edition of On Wednesdays We Rock Letters we feature our first ever entity, the chapter who set off into motion the legacy that we strive to build upon: the Almighty Alpha Chapter.

Chapter Name and Letter:
Alpha Chapter, A

Location and University: Lubbock, TX. Texas Tech University

Chartered on campus: Founded on November 25, 1987

Chapter Chant: Alpha AF

Greek Council: Multicultural Greek Council

Campus Presence: Active house consists of 13 Brothers. Some of our brothers are a part of a couple different organizations but one in specific is the Hispanic Student Society. In 1964 a small group of Hispanic students, known as “Los Tertulianos” formed a student organization to promote the Hispanic culture of Texas Tech University. At the time, Los Tertulianos was the first minority student organization established at Texas Tech and set the building blocks of things to come. As the organization grew, the name changed with it. It finally settled on the Hispanic Student Society in 1984. The purpose of HSS is first and foremost is to promote Hispanic culture among the student body at Texas Tech University, the Lubbock community, and surrounding areas.

Interesting Fact: There is a room in the Student Union Building on campus dedicated to Omega Delta Phi. There is a plaque right by the door which states,

“OMEGA DELTA PHI

This room is dedicated to the men of Omega Delta Phi Fraternity of Texas Tech University. ODPhi was founded as a service/social organization by seven men on November 25th, 1987. The fraternity has evolved into a national multicultural organization. The brotherhood represents and promotes the traditional values of Unity, Honesty, Integrity and Leadership.”

The room consists of chapter collages, awards and a really nice glass cabinet. It is something very special here at Alpha Chapter and a famous attraction for brothers visiting from out of town. It represents how successful our founding fathers became by building Omega Delta Phi from the very bottom here, in Lubbock, TX. It cements the legacy ODPhi has forged from day one at the Almighty Alpha Chapter.

Upon being activated, Brothers at Texas Tech earn a traditional crew sweatshirt with the letter emblazoned on its chest, this is a tradition of Alpha chapter and one that has withstood the test of time.

Chapter Traditions: Here at Alpha Chapter most of our “chapter traditions” are basically our national traditions, considering most of the traditions began here at the motherland of our fraternity. Though, there is one tradition in which only occurs here at Alpha. Every spring semester the chapter hosts a club event named “Jungle Jam” this is a Hawaiian themed social event. This event has been a part of Alpha for over 20 years.
